TIME WARNER CABLE - FULL SERVICE NETWORK

Digital Interactive Facility

It was a simple 3 year experiment bold in concept and design. Will people want and use an interactive cable service? Time Warner was about to find out.

Choosing a 3000 home area, families were given the opportunity to participate in a grand experiment. A set-top box in the home provided direct on demand movies along with creature comforts such as ordering food and services on-line. Time Warner chose ET-Studios to design their facility. Knowledgeable and experienced in the new MPEG compression technology ET was the right choice.

Since the network would run 24 hours a day it would have a constant flow of people. And since the edit rooms were staffed for 3 shifts each day, the equipment was almost never turned off. Bill turned to a design concept that would allow for maximum use of people and power.

The core area would hold the equipment racks which housed both the edit support, distribution and routing equipment as well as the network broadcast gear. The outer layer of space surrounding the core held the edit, audio, and compression suites and beyond that offices.

The facility was the most up to date broadcast and compression facility for it's time. It was so unique that tours were given on a regular basis the first year of operation.
